Material
Mild Steel
The structural and back-of-house workhorse. Strong, economical and readily welded — and it must be coated, because unprotected mild steel corrodes.

Detail
Specifying mild steel
| Properties | High strength, easily welded and formed, considerably cheaper than stainless, and magnetic. |
|---|---|
| Where to specify | Sub-frames, carriers, brackets, gates, fencing, bollards, planters and anything that will be powder coated or concealed. |
| Finishes | Powder coating in any RAL, or primed. Mild steel is not specified bare in an exposed position. |
| Fabrication notes | Forms and welds predictably, which makes it the sensible choice for structural sub-assemblies behind an architectural finish. |
| Cost note | Where a section is concealed, mild steel behind a stainless face is usually the right engineering and commercial answer. |
