Types of metal ceiling system

Vertical blades hung from a concealed carrier at a set spacing. The depth of the baffle and the gap between them together decide how much of the soffit, services and lighting stay visible from below — which is why the section is usually resolved on a mock-up rather than on paper. Excellent service access, because there is nothing to remove.

A baffle folded into a U so both faces and the bottom edge are finished metal. The closed bottom edge is what distinguishes it visually — there is no exposed sheet edge anywhere in the sightline.

Continuous planks running in one direction with open or closed joints between them. The direction of the run is a plan decision: it lengthens a corridor and can be used to point at an entrance.

An egg-crate grid that reads as a surface from a distance and as a void from directly beneath. Very good for services and sprinklers; poor for concealing an untidy soffit.

Panel systems. Lay-in tiles sit on an exposed grid and lift out for access; clip-in panels engage into a concealed carrier for a flush surface but need a tool to remove. Choose on access frequency before appearance.

In practice: how much of the soffit you want to hide, how often somebody needs to get above it, the ceiling void depth available, and whether the room needs the perforation and backing that absorb sound. Appearance usually arrives fourth in that list.
